MTHFR!

29 Sep

Remember this?  So yeah, that was the one test that came back positive.  MTHFR!  Although, according to my doctor, it’s pretty controversial and not proven either way to lead to miscarriage.  (Here’s more information on it: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR).)  As she summed it up: it’s an inability to absorb folic acid*.  But honestly, I don’t believe that that would lead to miscarriage.  Folic Acid is only supposed to prevent spina bifida and other bone/spinal problems, as far as I know it doesn’t prevent a miscarriage.  But then again I’m not a doctor.  Although even the doctors don’t believe it causes a miscarriage.

So what does this mean?  Ugh, it basically means I take some vitamins and cross my fingers.  She’s going check with a fertility specialist and see what she recommends, but it will most likely be a combination of extra Folic Acid, B6 (or Bsomeothernumber, I forget), Progesterone and Baby Aspirin.  Again, ALL of those have not been proven.  I think I’ve said it before, I’m a proof kind of gal.  Don’t get me wrong!  I will try anything, including a concoction of hopeful vitamins and drugs in order to keep a baby, but I just hate crossing my fingers.  I wanted something that was proven to work, and none of this is.

*Edited 9/30/2010 – It turns out it leads to blood clotting as well, which would be a huge factor in miscarrying.  My doctor didn’t say that at the time, but she did admit she didn’t know much about it, so that might be why.  I’ll be interested in hearing what the doctor she talks to says.
